We are sorry – we are out of the Doka Estate La Laurina coffee. We hope to get more in the future!
If you’ve never heard of La Laurina coffee, buckle up because you are in for a treat!
Sugarwood’s Doka Estate La Laurina is a special coffee variety that’s significantly lower in caffeine than your standard Arabica and massively lower in caffeine than robusta beans. The result is a coffee that doesn’t go through a decaffeination process that can degrade taste. It’s just coffee processed like a normal coffee… without all the caffeine!
Tasting Notes for our Doka Estate La Laurina Coffee
Fairly bright with a touch of acidity, we pick up on some muted berry sweetness and a sugary touch that is reminiscent of red apple. Doka Estate La Laurina is not a heavy coffee but it’s not entirely tea-like either. So, let’s call it a medium-bodied cup.
About the Costa Rica Producer
The Vargas Family produced our Doka Estate La Laurina in Costa Rica’s Central Valley region. They harvested this naturally processed bean from around 4,000 feet of altitude above sea level. The Vargas Family founded their Doka Estate in the foothills of Costa Rica’s famous Poas Volcano.
What Are La Laurina Coffee Beans?
La Laurina is a naturally occurring low caffeine coffee. The variety dates back into 18th century Africa. Because the beans don’t contain as much caffeine, it’s very difficult for farmers to successfully cultivate. (Caffeine can give coffee cherries a bitter taste, which helps protect the plants against insects or other animals that might be looking for a snack.)
How Much Less Caffeine is in Doka Estate La Laurina Than Other Coffee?
Caffeine In Each Bean | Caffeine In 100 Grams | Caffeine Per Ounce | |
---|---|---|---|
La Laurina | 3mg | .4-.7g | 115-200mg |
Arabica Variety | 6mg | 1.2-1.5g | 340-430mg |
Robusta Variety | 10mg | 2.2-2.7g | 630-770mg |
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, La Laurina is a great option. Compared to Arabica and Robusta coffees you’re looking at about a half-caf style drink.
However, you should know that La Laurina beans are not legally considered “Decaffeinated” because in the U.S. the coffee must be 97% free of caffeine.
La Laurina vs Decaf Comparison
Coffee Type | Caffeine Per 12 oz. Cup |
---|---|
La Laurina | 75mg |
Typical Decaf Coffee | 9mg |
Arabica Coffee | 150mg |
So, La Laurina is a great choice if you’re jittery after a couple cups of standard coffee. However, if you are looking for something to sip before bedtime, you might be wise to check out some of our other, 97% caffeine free decaf coffee options.
