Sumatra Weh Ilang Gayo Tasting Notes
We start with top of the line Arabica beans from Indonesia. Then, we roast them to a rich, dark cocoa shade of bean. The finished product offers up flavors of brown sugar, dark chocolate, a touch of tobacco sweetness along with some fruity notes of prune and grape. Due to their high altitude, these beans don’t deliver a ton of acidity and offer a smooth cup once brewed.
This coffee is wet-hull processed. This helps deliver a cleaner experience than some of the dark, somewhat earthy and nearly “dirty” finishes you might have experienced with a other dark roast coffee.
“Gayo” refers to the Gayonese people, the native residents of the central mountains of Aceh province on the island of Sumatera in Indonesia.
About Weh Ilang Coffee
The producers grow this coffee about a mile above sea level. In fact, comes from one of the highest valleys in the part of Indonesia known as the Takengon area. Rare for that part of the world, temperatures dip to as low as freezing. In fact, it’s not unusual to see snow fall in the July – September growing season there. That means the Weh Ilang Gayo takes a little bit longer to ripen before it can be picked. As a result of that additional waiting time, you get a coffee that’s ready to deliver ripe fruit flavors, some sugary sweetness along with an overall bold and heavy profile.
